The escalating air pollution levels in many countries, on account of the large-scale usage of oil and diesel-powered vehicles, are driving the requirement for electric scooters and motorcycles in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Moreover, with the rapid deterioration of the environment, the governments of many APAC countries are implementing policies and providing financial incentives for augmenting the deployment of electric scooters and motorcycles. For instance, the Indian government has recently increased the subsidy on electric two-wheelers by as much as 50% under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid ) and Electric Vehicles (FAME) II scheme.

Besides the aforementioned factors, the growing requirement for convenient transportation modes among daily commuters is also pushing up the demand for electric scooters and motorcycles in the APAC region, which is, in turn, fueling the expansion of the APAC electric scooters and motorcycles market. Because of this reason, the size of the market is predicted to grow to 31.2 million units by 2025, while the market will advance at a CAGR of 7.6% from 2018 to 2025, as per the estimates of PS Intelligence, a market research company based in India. These vehicles allow people to travel shorter distances.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) and sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries are the two major types of batteries used in electric scooters and motorcycles. Between these two, the usage of SLA batteries was found to be higher in electric scooters and motorcycles in the APAC region during the last few years. Whereas, in the coming years, the demand for lithium-ion batteries is predicted to rise at a faster pace, on account of their longer lifespans and lower weights than that of the SLA batteries.

Battery and plug-in are the two types of technologies used for powering electric scooters and motorcycles in the APAC region. Of these, the popularity of the plug-in technology was found to be higher in 2017. The demand for this technology is also predicted to soar sharply in the coming years, due to the lack of proper battery swapping infrastructure and its ability to provide greater convenience than the plug-in technology.

In the APAC region, the sales of electric scooters and motorcycles was found to be the highest in China in the years gone by. Moreover, the demand for these vehicles will rise enormously in the country in the forthcoming years as well. This is attributed to the implementation of various policies by the government such as stringent bans on the ownership of gasoline-powered motorcycles in certain cities and the provision of subsidies by the government on the prices of electric scooters and motorcycles in the country.

Hence, it can be said without any hesitation that the demand for electric scooters and motorcycles will rise sharply in the APAC region in the forthcoming years, primarily because of the growing requirement for eco-friendly vehicles, on account of the escalating pollution levels, and the implementation of favorable policies by the governments of several countries in the region.
